Doctoral candidates in EIFFEL

Who is Francesco?

Francesco Galli was born in Rome, Italy, and at 11 years old he moved to Bologna, where he studied for its bachelor and master degrees in Physics at the Alma Mater Studiorum. The aim of his master thesis was probing the surface of a hematite layer, intended as an active material for hydrogen photoproduction, using an Atomic Force Microscope. Thanks to this project, he discovered his strong interest in the nanoinvestigation of photoactive materials, with the goal of better understanding the fundamental mechanisms of the light-matter interaction.

Aside from the scientific aspects of his life, he loves experiencing nature and people from different countries; for example, during his Erasmus in Geneva, Switzerland, he spent many weekends hiking on the nearby mountains with his international friends. This is an activity that he tries to pursue in every city he visits, in tandem with photography. Another hobby that perfectly links the natural and social aspects is sailing, which he has practiced for 10 years now.

Francesco’s perspective on EIFFEL

Regarding EIFFEL project, he believes that, through this doctoral research path, there is large room of growth, both scientifically and on a personal level. He is thrilled about the research line of studying the non-fullerene acceptor active layer at nanoscale level, combining experimental techniques that could correlate different physical properties of the material. Additionally, he greatly values the opportunity to tackle the same macro-topic with his EIFFEL colleagues, discussing interconnected aspects and bringing different background and experiences.
